Shelter 2015 visit by Lesley

Well my time here is nearly over. It has been an interesting adventure, one to pull on your heart strings - you have to try and pull back a bit and let your head take charge, otherwise dealing with these dogs would really upset you. When you consider 'S' started this shelter with little or no help she has done a marvellous job, thankfully she now has help from a great admin team who raise funds and support her. Even people in the town are beginning to see the advantages of a possible spay program and the council are potentially lending support .

All the dogs at the shelter are adorable , from Balder,  one of the longest stay dogs, to the 3 week old puppies. There is every colour and size imaginable - everywhere you look is dogs. Over the week I have cuddled most of them (some are too scared to be touched) . I even made friends with Mr Darcy, the blind and nearly deaf grumpy cocker spaniel and he really enjoyed behind his ears being rubbed. Nero, a small chocolate Labrador type,  really stole my heart - he is so good in every way but unfortunately has a blood disorder and leishmania, so gets overlooked. I have great hopes we can bring him over for Pete and I to foster. I think Nero will get on with Niki, who I recently adopted and I'm sure there is a home out there somewhere for him. Once people have seen him, they will love him!

All the puppies are adorable too and within a week of Lynne and I playing with them, have become quite socialised. The 3 orphan shepherd puppies are improving every day and their hair will slowly grow back. The 3 hound puppies are just beginning to leave their den and explore their surroundings, I will miss playing with them all. Luke and Mo should be arriving in the UK in January and I'm sure this fluffy duo will be snapped up long before they arrive. I'm hoping I will have the opportunity to see them before they go to their new homes. I wonder if they will remember me?

I will really miss all the dogs when we go. You cannot help but get attached but at least I can look forward to a lot of them traveling to England to find their  forever homes. The ones we cannot help are always a worry but at least they are safe from the poisonings and have plenty to eat ; a much better life than being on the street.
In a while I will be giving them all their last cuddle and saying goodbye,  I'm sure it will be emotional but I know 'S' and her helpers are keeping them safe and I'm sure I will visit again soon.

The Legend Of The Collar

27/11/2015

Two of us volunteers are in Greece for a week helping with the 50 or so dogs in Elpida Shelter of Hope, Livadia.
I want to tell you a story...
There is a fable that gets passed round dogs in shelters (they know exactly what is happening every minute of every day and observe us humans' every move), that mothers tell their puppies, brothers tell their sisters, kennel mates tell their bonded partners. In hushed tones, late at night, they whisper to each other 'When they put a collar on you, that means you might be going! Try to be good, stay still while they buckle it up. Then let them put a long thingy on to the collar and show them that you can do what they ask. Don't resist, sit or lie down or twist your neck around. Just walk alongside them and be proud of your collar because it is your passport to their world of food, warmth, soft beds and 'walkies'.  Let them point that clicking box at you and let them stretch that measuring thing over you. Then maybe, just maybe, you will be on the next van, on the way to a home....We will miss you and wish it was us but we want you to be happy and we will wait patiently until it’s our turn. Some of us know, deep down, that it will never be our turn but hey - we are dogs, and dogs are loving, giving creatures who will live in Hope to the end of our days.'

Here is a look back at this years volunteer trip to Elpida in September.
In the eight weeks that have followed 10 dogs have arrived here in the Uk and another 5 are due in a few weeks time. Many have been adopted but some are still in foster and looking for their forever homes.
