Recommended Equipment for Adopters and Fosterers
Thank you for welcoming one of our dogs into your home!
We have compiled a list of recommended products that will help you prepare for and care for your new foreign rescue dog.
HARNESSES, COLLARS AND LEADS
You need a standard flat, buckle-fastening collar with a sturdy metal loop for lead attachment and an engraved identity tag (or identity-embroidered collar) with your surname, address and telephone number. Always attach the lead to the integral metal loop of the collar, not to the flimsy metal loop that holds the tag. Reflective and LED light accessories for collars are essential for walking after dark.
'Perfect Fit' harnesses are very comfortable for dogs and tend to be quite adjustable so can adapt to a growing dog or unusually-shaped dogs.
https://www.dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit-fleece-dog...
However, for a harness to be totally escape-proof, it generally needs an extra strap that goes around the dog's belly, this prevents them from being able to back out and wriggle their legs through the holes. These are a bit more pricey but worth it if a dog is a known escape artist. There is a good guide to escape-proof harnesses here:
https://www.facebook.com/caringforstreetdogs/posts/1770421299919423
And several suggested brands include:

Ferplas ERGOTREKKING
http://www.ferplast.com/gb/ergotrekking.html
Mountain Paws Dog Hiking Harness.
https://www.mountainpaws.co.uk/…/dog-lea…/dog-hiking-harness
For extra peace of mind, you can use a carabiner clip to attach the harness to the collar when out walking (not to be left on in the house when unattended). This is not essential equipment but is a method to ensure that the harness and collar are always directly connected to one another. Therefore, if the dog does manage to slip the collar or harness, they would still be linked through the carabiner.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KH43ZVO/
Double-leading is essential with a new rescue dog. One lead must be attached to the collar and another to the harness at all times when out on walks, until the dog has acclimatised to life in the UK. Either use two normal leads, a dual lead-splitter, or a double-ended lead. The halti double-ended lead is a popular choice. It is padded for comfort and one of the clips is a little smaller and lighter - perfect to attach to the collar:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Company-of-Animals-HTL-Training/dp/B004W7561U?th=1
You will need a long (5m or 10m) lead for training recall (dogs should NOT be allowed off-lead unless in a fully secure field until their recall is reliable). Biothane leads are a good choice. They are reflective, waterproof and do not get tangled in undergrowth, trees etc. or knot themselves up when stored. They are long-lasting and worth the investment. Always attach to harness, never collar.
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_collars_dog_leads/nylon_leads/special/194643
Another choice of long line is a soft-feel fabric version. This is easier to tangle and is not waterproof or weather-resistant, so is better for use on dry summer days, but this lead does carry a lower risk of friction burn of the hands or ankles than plastic or rope varieties.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shires-Wessex-Soft-Lunge-Black/dp/B00JDPJA4K/
Slip-leads are important equipment for collecting a new rescue dog off transport, but these should not be used for daily walking.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Arcton-Durable-Training-Adjustable-Traction/dp/B013YRQBNA/
A seatbelt harness clip or lead clip is needed for car journeys, if your dog is not travelling in a crate. Dogs should always be secured in cars at all points, to keep the dog and humans safe while driving and prevent the dog from being able to bolt out of the car when the door or window is opened.
https://www.wooftastic.co.uk/product-page/car-harness-and-seatbelt-clip
Another option which is slightly more expensive but good for dogs that fidget on the car seat is a swivel seatbelt tether, which prevents the dog from getting tangled in the lead or attachments.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kurgo-Swivelling.../dp/B00ISWM8IY
‘Nervous’ or ‘Give Me Space’ bandanas, harnesses, jackets and leads can be very useful when walking an anxious rescue dog, reducing the number of unknown people and dogs that approach and therefore giving your dog a less stress-free walk.
http://www.friendlydogcollars.com/product-category/nervous/
Cat or falconry bells for collars are very useful for all dogs if walked off-lead, particularly those who have a tendency to roam or chase or when you are walking in areas with lots of visual disturbance such as thick forests or long grass. They allow you to easily locate your dog's position using your ears.
https://foreverhoundstrust.org/product/new-collar-bell/
NB: we do not support the use of retractable leads or choke, prong, spray or electric shock collars.
CLEANING
Enzymatic cleaners are the best choice for cleaning up any toileting accidents in the house. The enzymatic action eradicates any lingering odours or stains to prevent the dog being encouraged to use the same spot again. Simple Solution products are recommended.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Simple-Solution-Platinum-Urine-Blaster/dp/B00JILBURE
‘Mopsocks’ are excellent items for easily cleaning up muddy pawprints without having to use a mop and bucket or get down on your knees and scrub the floor. With mopsocks, simply attach them to your feet and slide along the floor, easily removing the paw prints as you go. These are great ways to save energy, time and cause less stress to an anxious dog (many dogs are fearful of mops, brooms, steam-cleaners and other household appliances)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Slippers-Cleaner-Bathroom-Office-Kitchen/dp/B00CHG5G2M
Poo bags are a no-brainer, but biodegradable, fragranced poo bags are a good choice!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Large-Biodegradable-100count-Scented-Friendly/dp/B01LZT9G93/
Dicky bags are sweet-smelling solutions to the irritation of having to lug around full poo bags on walks until you can find a bin. These snazzy bags can clip to a bag or belt and act as a sweet-smelling compartment for your used poo bags, to keep your hands free (and nose happy) until you find a bin
https://www.wooftastic.co.uk/blank-n3qej/wooftastic-dicky-bag-medium
Do not give the dog a bath until he is well settled into your home, for a few days at least.
The best shampoos to use on dogs with sensitive skin are pH-balanced types, especially those with added antibacterial and antifungal properties, such as malacetic shampoo:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Malacetic-Shampoo-Dog-Cat-230ml/dp/B006ZN1LMC
or dermacton shampoo for dogs with itchy or irritated skin:
http://www.aromesse.com/skin-problem/petnat-itchy-skin-relief-dermacton-cream-spray-shampoo-dog-canine.html
Dog wipes are easy solutions for cleaning a dog without the trauma of a bath or grooming session. The best wipes to use are those with hypoallergenic chemicals tailored to a dog’s skin.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pogis-Grooming-Wipes-Hypoallergenic-Fragrance-Free/dp/B010MVG6ZY/
Different dogs require different levels and types of grooming, but there are grooming kits available that provide the basics. You will soon find which brushes are the best fit for your dog.

HEALTH CARE
Antibacterial powder is a must-have item for any dog-owner. It should be applied immediately to any wound or irritated area. This dries up the wound, soothes the itching and the antibacterial and antifungal properties also ward off infection.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vetzyme-Antibacterial-Powder-40-g/dp/B01EJO84MS/
Thornit is another antibacterial powder designed for treatment of sore or itchy ears.
www.viovet.co.uk/Thornit-Canker-Ear-Powder/c13949/
Diluted hibiscrub is a good antiseptic wound-cleaner for dogs.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/HibiScrub-IC10008781-Skin-Cleanser-250/dp/B00VXNHG1Y/
Warm salty water is also effective for cleaning dirt and bacteria from wounds.
Vet wrap is brilliant for dressing wounds. It is self-adhesive, strong and resistant to chewing. For large or overly active dogs, use the equine version. It is best to put down soft gauze padding on the wound first and then vet wrap fully around the wound. Secure in place with sticky tape or plaster and replace frequently.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vetrap-Bandage-Black-Yellow-Purple/dp/B01ELB6WPU/
Inflatable head collars are a comfy alternative to rigid plastic cones, to be used to prevent a dog from licking a wound after injury, surgery or illness. They are less intrusive and upsetting for the dogs compared to the cumbersome plastic cones
https://www.wooftastic.co.uk/product-page/inflatable-collar
For more flexible dogs or wounds/surgery to the rear end or legs, a soft rigid cone is a good alternative to the conventional plastic versions
www.amazon.co.uk/Comfy-Cone-Large-25-cm/dp/B000XY7C7C
If your dog cannot tolerate the inflatable, fabric or conventional plastic cones, you may want to consider getting a veterinary onesie. This is not effective for a dog who is recovering from wounds to the legs or feet, but can be very useful to stop dogs from licking wounds on the torso or back.
Tropiclean anti-plaque drops are essential for maintaining dental health. It can be added to food and water.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tropiclean-Fresh-Breath-Water-Additive/dp/B00AAV0MQQ
Microfibre tooth cleaners for dogs are the most gentle way to introduce your dog to tooth brushing for dental hygiene.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lintbells-YuCARE-Cleaner-Natural-Antibacterial/dp/B004W78EFK
Montmorillonite Suspension or ‘Dickytummy’ solution is a fast-acting and effective treatment for diarrhoea in dogs. It helps remove toxins from the digestive system and can be syringed into the back of the mouth or mixed into food.
https://www.aviform.co.uk/?shop=shopitems/dickytummy.suspension.for.dogs.2256.aspx
You can also add cooked pumpkin or sweet potato to the diet to soothe upset stomachs.
Pro-kolin contains probiotic bacteria to provide fast relief of diarrhoea and stomach upsets. Can be syringed directly to back of mouth or mixed into food.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Protexin-Pro-Kolin-Plus-Syringe-60/dp/B007FB3YBO/
Probiotics are good for any dog, but particularly beneficial to rescue dogs who may have suffered poor nutrition in the past. A list of various probiotic options can be found here:
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/6-best-probiotics-for-dogs/
The best probiotic powder for long-term supplementation should be hypoallergenic and with a palatable flavour:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07417V8NG
You can also get probiotic and prebiotic tasteless drops to add to food:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tropiclean-Probiotic-Supplement-Drops-Dogs/dp/B01DS6Q3OO/
And probiotic tablets if you prefer:
https://www.viovet.co.uk/Protexin-Digestion-Synbiotic/c1442/
For fast-acting probiotic treatment for short-term digestive issues, fortiflora is a good option recommended by vets:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PRO-PLAN-VETERINARY-FortiFlora-Complement/dp/B015NXK4ZO/
Adaptil tablets, collar, spray or diffuser and pet remedy drops, spray or diffuser are homeopathic treatments for anxiety and may help calm the dog and help him acclimatise to his new environments over the first few weeks.
Calming tablets that contain L-tryptophan or L-theanine tend to be the most effective, such as calm-eze and kalm-aid, as well as pheromone based tablets such as zylkene.
The dog will be de-flead and wormed before travelling, but then will need repeats every month or so for fleas and a few times a year for worms. The best worming and flea treatment are Drontal for worming and Advantage for other worming and fleas. These can be obtained from a vet. Other spot-on treatments can be bought at shops but may be less effective. Certain shampoos such as Neem shampoo are good flea-deterrents.
If you do find a tick on your dog, it is important that it is removed quickly and correctly. There are tools available so that you can remove a tick at home, but if at all concerned about the removal or suspect some tick may be remaining, please visit a vet.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Remover-Removal-Animals-Instructions-Included/dp/B01HH345MQ/
Take your veterinarian’s advice on vaccinations with a pinch of salt. Most dogs do not require vaccinations as frequently as once a year and we would recommend that inoculations are carried out every 3 years instead. All essential vaccinations are given to your dog before they travel to the UK.
If you are worried about whether your dog needs annual vaccinations or need to provide proof of your dog's vaccination history (for instance when boarding or training) we would advise you look into titre tests, which measure your dog's level of immunity and determine whether a booster is needed.

OTHER EQUIPMENT
Dog crates are essential for foster dogs and also very useful for adopted dogs too. Crates allow a dog to be contained within a safe area, kept separate from other household pets or feared humans and can also act as a safe refuge for nervous dogs. Crate-training must be positive and consistent so that the dog associates the crate with positive experiences, such as eating and sleeping, rather than a punishment or prison. Dogs should not be kept in the crate during long periods except at night. We recommend rigid or wire crates in preference to fabric crates, which are easily broken, and the base tray should always be lined with a blanket or bed for comfort. Crates should be placed in a quiet area of the house, away from food storage/preparation, windows and heavy traffic from people. They can be covered in towels to provide a secure den-like area and reduce outside distraction. Ensure the crate is big enough for the dog to be able to comfortably stand up and move around to a degree.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Single-Door-Folding-Metal-Crate/dp/B00QAVO07C/
Baby gates are must-have items for most homes upon welcoming home a new rescue dog. They can be used to separate dogs during food preparation or feeding times, keep dogs out of safe or unwelcome parts of the house, separate dogs from young children, prevent dogs from bolting out of the front door or rushing at visitors and help keep a dog contained when unattended. Baby gates are particularly important if you choose not to crate-train your dog.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0089HDZYO/
‘Child lock’ safety cupboard and door latches are useful for keeping dogs out of cupboards, bins, fridges and even toilets! Street dogs are often highly-skilled scavengers, so keeping food off counters, in dog-proof boxes and child-locked cupboards may be essential at first.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lindam-Safety-Catches-Cupboards-Drawers/dp/B001C0LTXE
Food should be appropriate for the dog’s size, age, lifestyle, health and preference. We recommend food should contain high-quality protein (but not too protein-rich), as well as vegetables and healthy carbohydrates in the form of grain-free ingredients. There is a huge variety of kibble, wet food and even pre-prepared, raw food on the market, so it is always best to read the ingredients and go with quality rather than price. (Good food means good health so therefore fewer vet visits of behavioural problems, so it really is worth the extra pennies!)
https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/
Food and water bowls are obvious essentials. Absorbent food bowl mats help keep mess at bay. If your dog has a tendency to eat food very quickly, and does not guard food, a slow-feeder bowl is a good way to prevent gastric upset. It also adds a degree of mental enrichment to your dog’s daily meals.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/wangstar-Interactive-Feeder-Drink-Water/dp/B01JG9RG3E/
Treat pouches, belts or bags are really useful when training and walking a dog. It is important, especially during early training, that you have good treats at hand to be able to quickly and efficiently reward your dog for good behaviour, such as walking to heel, recall or behaving well around a distraction. Most treat bags also contain pockets for keys, phones and other items, as well as compartments for convenient poo-bag dispensing, hooks for extra items such as water bowls or dicky bags and straps for carrying.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/WoofWoof-Treat-Training-Collapsible-Travel/dp/B071FYM5T1/
Kongs are brilliant items for keeping a dog entertained and satisfied for longer periods. Dogs can be fed their meals inside a kong or tasty snacks such as leftovers, yoghurt, peanut butter, mashed potato and meat pate. The possibilities are endless! Ensure you choose the right size kong for your dog to increase accessibility and avoid any risk of choking. Kongs can even be frozen to make them last longer. These are great distraction techniques to keep dogs occupied while you have guests or when the dog is left unattended for short periods.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Classic-Dog-Toy-Medium/dp/B000AYN7LU/
Snuffle mats have a similar purpose to kongs but offer a different type of enrichment. Instead of chewing for food, snuffle mats encourage dogs to sniff out each tasty morsel. Providing a dog with a snuffle mat is a great mentally-engaging exercise and also helps calm and focus an anxious or excitable dog. Harder food such as kibble, frozen vegetables, cheese and small treats are perfect for snuffle mat filler.
https://www.wooftastic.co.uk/blank-n3qej/snuffletastic-mats
Licki-mats are another option for enrichment feeding that works best for moist or spreadable food such as dog-safe peanut butter, yoghurt, cheese, wet food and vegetables.
https://ruffshop.co.uk/product-tag/licki-mat/
Chewroot chews are great for both puppies and adult dogs. They are natural, eco-friendly, safe and long-lasting products that satisfy a dog’s instinct to chew as well as offering an earthy, appealing taste. These chews do not make much mess and last for a very long time, providing a dog with weeks of entertainment and stress-relieving activity. Especially with teething puppies, offering desirable chews instead gives the dog an alternative to chewing on furniture.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Wilds-EP-04-D-M-2202-Chewroots-Medium/dp/B013M0UA7M/
Calming music CDs can be great tools for relaxing a dog overnight or during stressful experiences like car journeys or being left alone. They are scientifically proven to help reduce stress hormones and heart rates in dogs:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00DJMBO6A/
You need a standard flat, buckle-fastening collar with a sturdy metal loop for lead attachment and an engraved identity tag (or identity-embroidered collar) with your surname, address and telephone number.

Another choice of long line is a soft-feel fabric version. This is easier to tangle and is not waterproof or weather-resistant, so is better for use on dry summer days, but this lead does carry a lower risk of friction burn of the hands or ankles than plastic or rope varieties.

Slip-leads are important equipment for collecting a new rescue dog off transport, but these should not be used for daily walking.

‘Child lock’ safety cupboard and door latches are useful for keeping dogs out of cupboards, bins, fridges and even toilets! Street dogs are often highly-skilled scavengers, so keeping food off counters, in dog-proof boxes and child-locked cupboards may be essential at first.

Licki-mats are another option for enrichment feeding that works best for moist or spreadable food such as dog-safe peanut butter, yoghurt, cheese, wet food and vegetables.
